David Chadwick Calls on Labour to listen to Mid Wales communities' Windfarms Concerns

The Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe, David Chadwick, has challenged the Labour Government in Parliament over its handling of major wind farm proposals across Mid Wales, warning that Ministers are dismissing both local concerns and serious objections raised by the Ministry of Defence.

Raising the issue directly with the Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens, Mr Chadwick highlighted growing unease among residents and small businesses about the scale and concentration of wind farm developments being proposed across the region.

Chadwick has previously stated that many constituents feel their legitimate concerns about landscape impact, tourism, infrastructure and cumulative development are being brushed aside.

In today’s exchange, Mr Chadwick pointed out that these concerns are not limited to local opinion alone. The Ministry of Defence has raised formal objections to at least one proposed wind farm (Parc Ynni Banc y Celyn, south of Builth Wells) and warning that it could pose a physical obstruction to air traffic movements and interfere with military training activities at the Sennybridge Training Area, one of the most important training locations for the British Armed Forces.

There is also a potential that Bute Energy’s proposed Garreg Fawr Energy Park could cause concerns for the MOD due to its location near the Epynt, although the MOD are yet to be consulted on this development.

In his question, Chadwick criticised Labour for appearing to dismiss concerns raised by local people in previous exchanges and asked whether the Government would at least take seriously the warnings issued by its own defence experts.

Commenting, Welsh Lib Dem MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick said:

“My constituents have raised serious and legitimate concerns about the sheer scale of wind farm proposals across Mid Wales, yet Labour seems determined to brush them aside.

“What makes this even more alarming is that the Ministry of Defence itself has warned that at least one of these developments could obstruct military air traffic and interfere with training at Sennybridge.

“If Labour won’t listen to the people who live and work in Mid Wales, will they at least listen to their own military? Communities here deserve to be heard, and our armed forces deserve to have their operational needs taken seriously.”
